Year in Review



The highlight of the 2007-08 school year was once again having the budget approved on the first try so that our students, coaches, advisors and myself could start out the school year on a positive note. I will always appreciate this. Other highlights included:
  • Mount Anthony employed a full-time athletic trainer for the first time in its school history. Renovations were made in the Activities Office area to accommodate the trainer. Jeff Wood, a veteran of 14 years as a trainer at MCLA, was hired in August and worked with athletes after school and into the evening at practices and games.
  • The Varsity football team, under new head coach John Callahan, registered its first winning season (5-4) since 1994.
  • Senior Mekenzie Krause placed 4th overall at the Vermont Cross Country Championships and 10th at the USATF X-C Nationals.
  • Girls Soccer Team captured the 6th annual MAU Girls Soccer Tournament championship early in the season, won just one more regular season game to finish 4-8-2, and then knocked off No. 3 Rutland and No. 2 Rice in the playoffs before falling to top seed Essex in the semifinals.
  • Varsity Wrestling broke a national record by winning its 20th consecutive state championship and finished with a 28-1 dual meet record for the year. Senior Scott Legacy II became just the second wrestler in the state to record 200 career victories.
  • Both boys and girls basketball teams made it to the Final Four at UVM with the girls winning their second consecutive state championship title. They finished 20-4 overall and were led by senior Alyssa Herrington, who was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Vermont. She became the sixth player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Coach Leo Reynolds was named the 2007 Vermont Girls Basketball Coach of the Year by the NFHS.
  • The Boys and Girls Cross Country Ski Teams had an outstanding winter with the boys finishing runner-up for the state title. The girls did one better, capturing their second straight state championship while recording an incredible 112-1 record on the season.
  • Zach Bartlett, only a sophomore, won the 55 meter state championship for indoor track and set a new school record in the event.
  • Senior swimmer Zach LeBarron was named Boys MVP at the Berkshire League Individuals.
  • The Boys Soccer, Wrestling and Girls Softball teams each captured Top Sportsmanship honors in the Marble Valley League and the Boys & Girls Basketball teams won their 5th Mona Garone Sportsmanship Award – selected by the state basketball officials – in the last eight years.
  • The Boys 4x100 Relay Team of Zach Bartlett, Jason Devens, Stephen Silber and Ziyaad Madany captured the state championship with a school record time of 44:38, the Girls 4x800 Relay Team of Kelsey Hoar, Emily Pietrucha, Kelsey Blakeney and Mekenzie Krause were runner-up state champions with a time of 9:53.33, and Colin Reisler broke the school record in the pole vault at 12 feet, one-inch for a third place finish.
  • Sr. Rochelle McGurn became the 4th girl in MAU Girls Lacrosse history to score 100 goals..
  • A new Athletic & Activities Digest for Students and Parents was completed and made available online. Physical/Participation forms area also now available online to print out.
  • Visitor’s Baseball dugout was expanded and sheds were built behind Middle School softball backstops to provided storage for softball teams. These projects were completed with fund-raising money.
  • MAUHS was honored to host the 81st New England Music Festival in March of this year. This festival brought more than 400 of the best student musicians from Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut. MAU had two band members, one orchestra member and five chorus member participate as students worked for 3 days with renowned conductors and performed two phenomenal concerts for record crowds.
  • The Chamber Singers were invited to sing at the lighting of the Capital Christmas Tree in Washington D.C. in December.
  • The MAU Drama Department had another successful season of full-house crowds with performances of “Hello Dolly,” “The Man Who Came To Dinner” and “You Can’t Take It With You.”
  • In its first year, the MAU Show Choir had successful performances at the Winter and Spring Choir Concerts and the highly attended Pops Concert in March. They also competed at the Spring Music in the Parks Festival and taking 1st Place with an Excellent Rating.
  • The Student Senate ran two Blood Drives, a Dodgeball Tournament and a Volleyball Tournament. Proceeds raised helped provide clothes and toys for needy families.
  • The Recycling Club collected paper and bottles throughout the year and raised over $700.00 with the all the money raised going to charity. Half was donated to a foreign exchange student in order to help him build a library in his native country of Afghanistan. The other half was donated to the Nature Conservancy to protect endangered lands.
  • The Scholar’s Bowl team had another successful year, capturing the southern regional championship with wins over Burr-Burton, Twin Valley and Black River.
  • Dollars For Scholars raised scholarship awards totaling $13,900 this year.
  • Two student members of the WonHwaDo Club s have been invited to the 6th European WonHwaDo Festival in Leipzig this summer.
  • S.A.A.D. worked with PAVE on two Peer Leadership programs at MS related to bullying and sexual assault. Six members attended Govenor’s Youth Leadership Conference.
  • Interact Club is planning its 3rd International Community Service trip to Somotillo, Nicaragua.
  • The Future Teacher’s Association had students help out at teacher in-service and held two teacher roundtable discussions where students and teachers talked about educational issues that occur in public schools.
  • Photography and Writer’s Club sponsored the very popular and well-attended British Invasion Concert in April. Proceeds helped pay for a book of student essays published by the Writer’s Club. The books were published by Shires Press and are available at Northshire Book Store and the Bennington Book Shop.
  • The Spanish Honor Society attended the Boston Flamenco Ballet performance of traditional Hispanic folks songs and dances as a field trip, and organized a “homework club” offering extra help with studying or homework to any student of Spanish two days per week.
  • The 25th annual MAUHS Model United Nations was held on May 19 & 22. The club also attended the Springfield A.I.C. Model Congress in January.
  • The National Honor Society raised over $1,200 for charity and sponsored four children for the “Sprit of Sharing” program. The group also contributed over 390 pounds of food for local shelters and tutored over 20 children on the high school and middle school level. The group’s 25-year total for charity donations has now surpassed $36,000.
